Es war die umfangreichste Krankenhausreform, die es in Deutschland gab: Im Jahre 2002 wurde die Krankenhausfinanzierung auf das System der German Diagnosis Related Groups (DRG) umgestellt. Die größte Schwäche des System: Es geht darin nahezu ausschließlich um medizinische Diagnosen und ärztliche Maßnahmen. Pflegeleistungen stellen lediglich einen Kostenfaktor dar.
