COVID-19 Knowledge Space

Mission

SARS-CoV-2 imposes a threat to human beings, to our economy and society. We aim at rapidly generating a comprehensive COVID-19 pharmacome and to use this resource to predict new drug candidates and better treatments against COVID-19.

Motivation

Fraunhofer SCAI has a long-standing record in the organization and curation (quality assessment and quality improvement of scientific data and knowledge) in entire indication areas. In the course of the AETIONOMY project, a collaborative project funded by the Innovative Medicine Initiative (IMI), we have organized all data and all knowledge about Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. The resulting knowledge base however, allowed us to perform computational biology experiments and approaches in artificial intelligence in an unprecedented fashion. We are working with major institutions in the area of scientific information provisioning like ZBMED in Germany and with the EBI, when it comes to regular updating of our knowledge bases.

COVID-19 resources

Information extraction services

BiK>Mi

The Biomedical Knowledge Miner (BiK>Mi) provides tools to access and validate knowledge encompassing all of the latest information pertaining to COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2).

SCAIView on COVID-19

The information retrieval system SCAIView allows for semantic searches in large text collections by combining free text searches with the ontological representations of entities derived by ProMiner.

Disease Models

SCAI has generated a comprehensive cause-and-effect model of SARS-CoV-2. It supports a wide spectrum of model-driven analytics. Other researchers can compare their published models with our model.

Terminology

Shared semantics are essential for the annotation and integration of data and for the communication of knowledge. To enable this, we created the COVID-19 terminology.

Corpora

We are currently facing a flood of publications on SARS-CoV-2 / COVID-19. The most important scientific literature corpora on COVID-19 are listed here.

Literature Mining

We have tuned our literature mining environment SCAIView for optimal performance on COVID-19 papers. The resulting COVID-19 SCAIView service is made publicly accessible.

Chemical Information Space

We have collected useful information on chemical compounds and approved drugs that may be active against SARS-CoV-2. Relevant chemical information can be found here.

Funding and support

Fraunhofer IME received support from the EXSCALATE4CoV project. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 101003551.

Fraunhofer SCAI, IME and IAIS received funding from the Fraunhofer internal funding program "MAVO" for the Human Brain Pharmacome project.

Fraunhofer SCAI and Fraunhofer IME received additional funding to support the collaboration with international text mining experts from the funding program "ICON" of the Fraunhofer Society.

Juliane Fluck and her team received support from the German Information Center for Life Sciences (ZBMED).
